Communicating Research Findings Beyond the Academic Audience
An excellent study can have limited influence if its findings remain difficult to understand. Researchers communicate with different audiences: journal reviewers, policy teams, community leaders, practitioners, funders and members of the public. Each audience needs accuracy, but not necessarily the same level of technical detail.

Begin with the central question and the most relevant findings. Explain why the issue matters before introducing detailed methodological choices. Avoid creating the impression that a single statistic tells the whole story; describe context, sample size, limitations and alternative explanations where they affect interpretation.

Visualisations can reveal patterns at a glance, but they must be designed responsibly. Choose chart types that suit the data, label units clearly, use comparable scales and avoid decorative effects that exaggerate differences. Make graphics accessible with meaningful descriptions and readable labels.

Different formats have different purposes. An academic paper supports detailed scrutiny. A policy brief summarises implications for a decision. A workshop enables discussion and questions. A short public article can introduce the same evidence in everyday language without compromising the underlying facts.

A useful approach is to write the key message in two sentences, provide three supporting observations and state one important limitation. Then invite questions: What would readers need to know before acting on this information? Which terms require explanation?

Research reaches its greatest potential when it becomes understandable, open to scrutiny and relevant to real decisions. Clear communication is therefore part of rigorous scholarship, not an optional finishing touch.
